China has a long history of recognizing the importance of health, including the benefits of exercise. While much of China’s philosophical approach to health was long disregarded by Western science, the Eastern methods of maintaining a healthy lifestyle have frequently been proven in scientific studies to be effective. One such method is the practice of Tai Chi Chuan, also known as Tai Chi.

Tai Chi is considered a ’soft’ martial art; that is, it traditionally focuses on inner power and spiritual balance, philosophically, rather than outward directed aggressive techniques. Modern Tai Chi practitioners, however, are more likely to be teaching their art as one which improves and maintains the health of their students, rather than as any form of combat.

The proven health benefits of Tai Chi are numerous. It has been shown to lower cholesterol, to reduce production of the hormone cortisol (which is a factor in gaining weight), to combat depression, increase flexibility and core strength, and have many practical applications in physical therapy.

One thing which makes Tai Chi so suitable for a wide variety of people is that it is a very low impact form of exercise. Tai Chi practice is based around the repetition of gentle, slow, conscientious muscle movements in patterns known as forms.
